The history of Woolf Aircraft Products begins in 1942 when
World War II affected everything. They were building B-24 Bombers at Willow Run where Clarence Woolf was a
welding instructor. Since Clarence knew the best welders getting off shift, he rented a two car, dirt floor
garage and hired them to weld for him. Soon, Clarence built a new factory, designed as a house next door to
where he lived. Although work did slow down, he had found a product niche with tubing. Clarence looked to the
newly developing television industry and saw the need for tubular TV antennas as well as school desks, for the
new baby boomers.
The need was soon evident for more space and a 1/2 acre site was purchased in Wayne. Our new building had a two story
office and one manufacturing area. Peace did not last long and we began building diesel engines and M-48 armored tank
parts. Our business continued to grow in aircraft, military and diesel engines and by 1965, we added a fifth addition
for welding. Each addition was made on a shoestring. The first addition had drywall sheets covered by tarpaper for a
roof. The second addition was wood planks, the third was precast concrete, then some modern steel.
The Vietnam years kept us busy building M-60 tank parts. We also picked up work from our basic customers who liked the
parts we were making. Then in the fall of 1973, Clarence died suddenly. A few weeks before his death our plant
superintendent also died while hunting.
1973 would not leave us with the death of our superintendent and Clarence. The FAA came and spent three days with us
going over our quality system, which was about to change. Within a month the newly formed OSHA walked in the door and
we learned what safety was really about.
Business continued to increase for us, and we started a second shift to keep up. We had to rent parking on both sides
of our building. Finally, in 1978, we rented a second manufacturing building and moved our small bending and tube
storage there. At the end of our three year lease, we built the first half of our current building, moving the tube
cutting and small bending here in 1981. After all the years of wanting to move, we now had 10 acres of land and built
an expandable building of 16,000 sq. ft. The separation between us caused many problems and in 1986 we expanded again,
and moved everyone to our current location.
We completed a 42,000 sq. ft. addition in May 2006 providing us 94,000 sq. ft. under roof. This involved moving 29,000
cubic yards of dirt to construct 4 retention ponds to meet new government requirements. Including resurfacing, new pavement,
buildings and ponds we have turned over all the ground on our ten-acre site and have prepared the site for future expansion.
We have improved equipment, systems training and benefits that help both our employees and customers. Today we celebrate over 65 years, born and grown
in the Greater Detroit area.
