Stock Elbows

Woolf Aircraft stocks elbows in various materials, bend radius, angles and thickness. Materials used are stainless grades 304, 316 and 321, aluminum types 6061 and 3003, and 1010 steel. The actual bend dies we have determine the bend radius. Normally they are a multiple of the outside tube diameter. They are referred to as 1D (one times the outside diameter), 2D or 3D. Standard radius is 2D, tight radii are 1 to 1-1/2D and wide radii are 3D or more.

Elbows are stocked in 45°, 90° and 180° of bend. 180's are the hardest to produce and have the greatest wall thinning because of the distance stretched around the bend. Our standard thickness is 16 gauge (.065"). Other walls available are 20 gauge (.035") 18 gauge (.049") and 14 gauge (.083"). Standard elbows usually have straight leg lengths of 1 times the tube diameter on one end and 2 times on the second.

Remember to allow for thinning in the bend. The stretching of the material during bending causes the outside of the bend to become thinner, while the inside can become thicker. This is due to the natural flow of material.

While Woolf Aircraft stocks 1200 various bent elbows for immediate delivery, we are also a custom fabrication job shop ready to make almost any assembly you require. With over 400 bend dies available, more than just about anybody in our industry, we can use over 30 power benders, 10 hand benders or specifically build benders for quick delivery. Add our tubing in stock to the thousands available from distributors, and you can see why we are able to supply most any need. We can also bend materials you supply to us. When supplying tubing, please let us know so we can verify that it is bendable, and insure that there is sufficient length for bend grip and machine set ups.

Transitions

Many high performance and custom applications require a transition from one size tubing to another. Transitions come in one of two ways: a 30° conical transition for the smoothest, aerodynamic change or a 90° step transition/expansion for a more abrupt change in the shortest distance possible. Woolf Aircraft stocks conical transitions in 1-1/2”-3” and 3”-5” sizes in stainless and aluminum. Step transitions/expansions are stocked in various sizes.
